Bionic Man

by Chuck Wolf

It has been a few months since my last communication with you, my friends. For more than 35 years, I have had an extremely arthritic knee, and the beginning of March my knee blew out...literally. I was working in my clinic, felt a catch and click in my right knee, a very common occurrence for many years. Only this time, I broke off a bone spur from my femur, bled into the knee capsule, was on crutches for 10 days, and had knee replacement surgery on March 11, 2011.

I have worked with many knee and hip replacement patients, but never appreciated the time, effort, discomfort, and compensations one goes through while rehabilitating this major surgery. I had taken time off from my clinical schedule, canceled numerous speaking engagements, and dedicated nearly all my time to my rehabilitation. I am amazed how much effort this journey has been; it has been and still is a 24/7 dedication. I have started back in the clinic, doing limited speaking engagements, and intend to resume periodic content with you through Facebook. For those of you who reached out and inquired where I have been, thank you for checking in with me. To all of you, I have missed contributing to our industry.

It is my intention to share a few perspectives from this experience. During this difficult period, I realized how much we, as an industry, have overlooked the challenges facing many clients who have had similar issues. Hopefully, these thoughts will provide you considerations and allow you to conceptually "walk in their shoes".

To your good health!
